Surfing Tours

Surf waves you don’t have to share with anyone except your people, in paradise

Would you like to surf waves with you and your friends that you don’t have to share with anyone else?
Would you like to surf in some of the most untouched locations on the planet?

If your answer to any of the above questions was yes, then this tour is for you.

We have created these surfing tours in Papua New Guinea to give you access to incredible waves, incredible locations and incredible experiences.

While there are many locations you can surf in Papua New Guinea, there are not that many places you can stay in relative comfort and experience the type of hospitality you would expect from an epic surfing adventure. Each one of these locations we have visited, stayed at, know the owners and know they provide the type of service you would expect.

Your surfing tour can start on whatever day works for you and your tour party and complete on whatever day works for you and your tour party.
You can select to visit one, two or all three surfing locations on your Papua New Guinea surfing adventure, keeping in mind that you will spend a day travelling between each location.

On day one of your Papua New Guinea Surfing Tour you will leave from Brisbane and land in Port Moresby approximately 3 hours later
You will then catch a domestic flight from Port Moresby to Kavieng Airport which will take approximately 1.5 hours.
You will reach your first surf location that evening, which is close to the Kavieng Airpot.
From this point onwards, your surf tour is completely customisable based on location and time (depending on availability), except for your flights home.
On the last day of your tour, you will fly from Kavieng Airport to Port Moresby, which is approximately 1.5 hours.
You will then fly from Port Moresby to Brisbane which is approx 2.5 hours (less on the homeward leg)

The surfing season in Papua New Guinea runs from November till April every year

When you go on surfing tours, there are other things you can do including fishing, markets, snorkelling, scuba and other tours. Each one of our three locations have their own options you can add on to your tour, often at no extra cost.

The Breaks

The Slab

A reef located in the entrance to a bay, which breaks best to the right. Extremely hollow in both directions, but only for 25 meters. Paddle, pull in, grab the rail, then get spat out. A 4 second ride that is a guaranteed cover-up and once you have it dialled, many ‘best barrel of my life’ moments will go down!

Vala Vala

A right-hand reef pass close to shore, with a flat weed-covered reef, and a double bowl section. Very consistent break – swell magnet for the area and a popular choice for all ability levels.

Malili

A long and playful workable wall. It’s a mellover option on the larger days, and good for all abilities.

Ral

20-minute boat ride from your accomodation. Tends to be a bit of a swell magnet. It picks up any swell that’s about and almost always has a wave when conditions are tiny. It is a right-hand reef break off the front of a tiny,  picturesque atoll that usually has a couple of take-off points on the peaky, racy walls.

Nago Rights

A fast, hollow, long walling right hander off the south western side of Nago Island. It requires a bit of swell & tide to get in on the reef to make it workable. This wave is for more experienced surfers, being one of the more demanding breaks in the area.

Nago Lefts

A wrapping left hander that grows as it runs down the line. It is a fun, user friendly wave with a workable wall and a hollow section through the inside. It’s a bit of a wave magnet and is reasonably consistent.

Long Longs

Everyone likes to get a taste of this long, walling right hander that is often described as a Bells Beach like wave, but without a wetsuit. It’s not as intense or as intimidating as some of the other breaks, but has a great bowling end section when it’s on. This wave is suited to Longboards or Fish/ Funboards and you can draw multiple clean lines of your choice as you make your way down this long, peeling wave.

Nusa Lefts

Nusa Lefts is a short boat ride from the Retreat to the mouth of the harbour. It’s a great left hander that comes out of deep water, hits the shelf, has a great take off, then it forms up into a short intense wall. An exit strategy is a must as the reef comes up very quickly at the end. You’ll need to keep an eye out for sneaker sets also, as sitting too far inside can bring you undone and no one likes getting a set on the head over sharp, shallow coral. Across the channel is the premier right-hand reef break in the area.

Pikinini

Often compared to a mini Kirra. It’s a hollow, quick and intense wave with no room for error. It is a bit like a relationship, there is no pulling back once you’re committed and the reef is shallow and will punish board and body if mistakes are made, but the rewards can be great. This is where the locals surf and communication is a must. They have a great attitude and are only too happy to share their waves when a little bit of respect is shown.

Rubio

This location has over 30 separate surf breaks in close vicinity to this location, with 17 they surf regularly. They have a policy of not sharing information about their breaks, other than photographs.

The Accommodation

All accommodation options provided on our surfing tours are bungalow on the beach style with the ability to have several people in each bungalow to allow more people to attend your surfing tour and to keep costs down. No location has a large number of bungalows, with some locations being for our sole use when we bring more seven or more guests to it. The photos below are of two of the locations, with the third being very similar.
